Omar Mateen: Pulse nightclub shooter changed name before marriage, divorce

ORLANDO, Fla. — Eyewitness News looked more into Omar Mateen and when the Pulse nightclub gunman decided to change his name.

Mateen filed court documents in St. Lucie County in August of 2006 to have his name changed from Omar Mir Seddique to Omar Mir Seddique Matteen.

Mateen, 29, was born in Queens, New York.

He also listed himself as a student at the time he requested to have his name change.

According to the court documents, he moved to Port Saint Lucie in 1991 and lived in New York from 1986 through 1991.

Mateen worked at various jobs including Publix, Circuit City, Chick-Fil-A and various nutrition stores.

In September of 2006, his name change was granted by the courts.

An application to marry was filled out in 2009 between Mateen and Sitora Yusufiy.

The license was issued in March of 2009 and effective April of 2009. They were married April 16, 2009.

The couple filed court documents in June of 2011 for a divorce.

Mateen said the marriage was irretrievably broken and was not requesting spousal support from Yusufiy.

Mateen worked at G4S, a security company, at the time the couple filed for divorce.

The court granted the divorce in July of 2011.
