Drivers' Education Program

Thursday, April 17, 2008 – updated: 6:59 pm EDT April 17, 2008

The deaths of five teens who attended the same Orange County high school have sparked a new effort to protect young adults who are behind the wheel.

The West Orange Parent Teacher Association will apply a $20,000 grant from the Ford Motor Company to teach safe driving programs across Central Florida.

Heidi Koch is spearheading the program which was started to honor five West Orange students who died in separate crashes during a six month period.

Koch believes the grant will help them provide a more effective program.

"It was astounding and it feels just like uh, adding to all the good work we've already been able to do," said Koch.

Eric Carr lost his daughter Erica in one of the crashes.

He hopes the program will keep other parents from suffering like his family has.

“Before this happened, I would hear people say that, I think of them everyday, but there isn't a day that goes by, I don't think of it,” said Carr.

The plan right now is to use the money for a student run video and print campaign for a problem that nationally is killing ten teen drivers a day.

"Teens will listen to other teens as parents we know they are not necessarily going to listen to us," said Koch.

With budget cuts hitting school districts, reaching teens is getting financially more difficult.

"Man if we could have one kid from having this situation, it doesn't really matter what the cost," said Carr.

Because of budget cuts, we've learned Orange County will *not have drivers’ education classes, this summer on campus. Instead, students will be directed to a vocational school that will have classes that cost 30-dollars. Seminole County will continue to offer drivers’ education, on a first-come, first served basis.
