The troubled economy is starting to hit central Florida's largest employer. While Disney World’s spokespeople said business is fine, many of the 62-thousand people who work there say they're struggling. According to spokespeople for Walt Disney World business is booming. They point to 2nd quarter earnings which were up. But union leaders don't expect profits to be passed on to cast members. "There's nothing that would keep them from giving a wage increase early or more than was negotiated but there's not much incentive to do so," said Union President, Eric ClintonEd Kontos, who works as a host at Disney's Hollywood Studios, was a proponent of the new union contract signed last year. That was before gas hit four bucks a gallon. He says he has to work about two hours each day-- just to cover the cost of his commute.“I’m not going to buy the food I did before, I'm not going to go to the movies,” said Ed Kontos.Disney announced last Friday it has started a pilot car pool program for cast members at the Magic Kingdom.A spokesperson also pointed to its health benefits for full and part timers, affordable childcare and a fringe benefit booklet with coupons."We work with businesses within the community to provide discounts from a haircut to lunch and bigger ticket items like automobiles and homes," said Andrea Finger. But Kontos, who makes about $10.00/hour, says he has to sell his home and Eli Rivera a Disney custodian has rode his bike on occasion.Neither will quit."When you walk out on stage it is a magical place because that's what we are trying to make, but when you walk off stage and you have to pay your bills, the magic is a little less," said Kontos.A Disney spokesperson also said they gave Lynx more than $1 million to increase routes for workers into the park and offers reduced cost for tickets.Sea World is doing the same and Universal Studios says those who carpool get preferred parking and a chance to win a free gas card each month.
