Is it worth trading in your car, to try and save money? We asked the same question for one Volusia County family and what we learned may surprise you.A day of driving for the Trope family consists of picking up Trevor from school, taking his sister to Grandma's and back and forth to two jobs."One job, I drive about 55 miles the other I drive about 65," said Mark Trope.Between their 2003 KIA Sorrento, and Mitsubishi Eclipse, they estimate they now spend 700-dollars a month, on fuel."It's crazy and it's getting to the point where we have to do something about it," said Christy Trope. At Deland Toyota, Glen Gibson hears that story every day. "Thirty-percent of our customers are looking for relief."People think hybrids are the answer, but they cost so much, he tries to talk them out of that. “For a lot of people that doesn’t make sense,” said Gibson. The Tropes could trade for a used car like a Corolla. They can get 35 mpg, but Gibson said demand and prices are up, and thousands of dollars down are necessary now, even for a used car. That's not to say a bike is the only way for a family to spend less on driving. Those things you always hear about, your tire pressure and maintenance will give you another mile or two per gallon and then there's a real money saver slow down.Simply easing your speed from 70 to 55, gives you 21-percent better gas mileage. That means instead of 300 miles on a tank, you could go for more than 360.
