$8,000.00 Duct Cleaning Nightmare

A Maitland woman claims a 35 dollar offer to clean the air ducts inside her home turned into an 8 thousand dollar nightmare.

The coupon offers whole house air duct cleaning for just 35 bucks. In Maitland, Elizabeth Davey thought her older home could use it. Elizabeth says its technicians from H and A Air told her, "well inside here it's just filled with mold and mildew and it just needs to be properly cleaned."

She was shocked by their final bill not 35 but 610 dollars. "I couldn't believe it---I could not believe it."

Action 9 hidden camera investigations have found companies offering cheap air duct cleanings frequently use high pressure tactics to inflate bills. That was not Elizabeth's biggest problem. One hour after the techs left, she said black smoke poured out the air vents. "I said my house is on fire. I'm starting to panic--and I called 9-1-1."

The Seminole County fire department found it started in the a.c. unit and suggested electrial wires had been crossed. Only the air handler was destroyed but it left the house without a.c.

According to Elizabeth, the company denied doing anything wrong and said it was an older unit so the fire could be a coincidence. Elizabeth disputed the 600 dollar credit card charge for the duct work but so far she's had to pay for the new a.c. system herself. "In the end it cost me 89 hundred dollars. I had to replace the unit."

The company owner says he offered repairs before, and he'll consider paying part of the replacement cost.
