A Luxurious Room On A Small Budget

Robyn Repya, Contributing Writer

It's important to establish a budget when planning to redecorate, whether you are doing it on your own or hiring the services of an interior designer.

Once a budget is established, it will be easier to plan how much you are able to do with your space.

One idea every designer mentioned that transforms a room for little cost was the use of paint. Paint has gained popularity over wallpaper because it is so much easier and cheaper to apply, said Carmen Bell, owner of Inside Story Interior Design in St. Paul, Minn.

It's also more practical, because if you don't like it, it's easy to redo. She said that white usually enlarges a space, so if you want your room to look bigger white might be the color for you.

Red is a very dramatic color, said Bell, which people either love or hate. While blue is known for it's cool and soothing qualities she said, which is good if you wish to have a calming and tranquil feel for your room.

Another way to alter your bedroom without spending a lot of money is to find one special piece from which to influence the way you decorate the rest of your room. Just one piece could change a room, said Jill Krieger, owner of Paris Flea Market in Minneapolis.

She said many people choose to splurge on one dramatic item for their room, like a chandelier -- perfect if they're going for the romantic look, and it creates a theme by which to decorate the rest of the room.

Focusing on lighting is also a relatively inexpensive way to set the mood for your room. Lighting has a great affect on the room and can be done inexpensively, said Lena LoPesio, owner of Vogue Furniture store in St. Louis Park, Minn.

She suggested that if you don't have much money to spend, adding a few candle sconces to the wall is a great way the be both dramatic and minimal.

The use of used goods is also a great decorating alternative to buying all new things. Used furniture, vintage fabrics and draperies or lamps that can be found at thrift stores or garage sales are great, Bell said, because they can be bought at a low cost and are the finds are usually very unique.
