Jones Beats Arslan To Win WBA Cruiserweight Title

Saturday, September 27, 2008

(Sports Network) - Guillermo Jones stopped Firat Arslan in the 10th round to win the WBA cruiserweight title on Saturday

Jones was pummeling Arslan with a flurry of shots to the head and the fight was halted with 27 seconds left in the 10th.

Jones, a 36-year-old Panamanian, was the No. 1-ranked challenger and improved to 36-3-2 (28 KOs).

Germany's Arslan, who turned 38 during the fight as it went past midnight, fell to 29-4-1 (18 KOs). He won the title in November 2007 from Virgil Hill and was making his second defense.

Jones had control of the match from the beginning with a series of uppercuts and shots to the body.

The German was bleeding heavily from the bottom lip and nose from the third round until the fight was ended. After the fight, Arslan was taken to a hospital for further examination.
