Mosley KO's Mayorga

Sunday, September 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - Shane Mosley knocked out Ricardo Mayorga just before the final bell on Saturday night in a battle of former champions at the Staples Center.

Mosley (45-5, 38 KOs) dominated for most of the non-title fight, then knocked Mayorga down with a big combination with about 15 seconds left in the 12th round. After Mayorga took the mandatory eight count, he walked straight into a left hand to the chin and again fell to the canvas.

The knockout came officially at 2:59 of the 12th round.

Mosley was the busier of the two and appeared to build a lead in the middle rounds. His domination was most evident in the sixth round, when a number of punches, including several combinations, found Mayorga's head.

This was Mosley's first fight in his native southern California since a victory over Oscar de la Hoya in 2000 at the Staples Center. He hadn't fought at all since a loss to Miguel Angel Cotto last November at Madison Square Garden.

Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KOs) has lost two of his last three fights. Before beating Fernando Vargas last November at the Staples Center, he lost to de la Hoya in May 2006.

On the undercard, Andre Berto earned a unanimous decision over Steve Forbes for the WBC welterweight title.

Berto (23-0, 19 KOs), won by scores of 118-109 on a pair of cards and 116-111 on another. Forbes (33-7, 9 KOs) was coming off a loss to de la Hoya four months ago.
