Temple Extends Dunphy

POSTED: 12:12 pm EDT July 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - Temple gave head men's basketball coach Fran Dunphy a two-year contract extension on Wednesday that will keep the two parties united until the 2013-14 season.

Dunphy, who is in his third season with the Owls, took over for legendary John Chaney in April of 2006.

"We knew when we hired Fran Dunphy two years ago that he was the right man to lead Temple basketball," said Director of Athletics Bill Bradshaw. "Now I am even more pleased to be able to tell the Temple community that he will be leading the program for at least the next six years. We could not have a better person, nor a better coach, at the helm."

Dunphy, who left the same position at the University of Pennsylvania to take the Temple job, guided the Owls to the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship. The team finished last season at 21-13 en route to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2000-01 campaign.

Dunphy posted a 310-163 record in 17 years with the Quakers, guiding the Ivy League power to 10 conference titles.

A resident of Villanova, Dunphy graduated from La Salle University in 1970. As a junior, he helped lead the Explorers to a 23-1 record and his senior year he averaged 18.6 points and led the team in assists and was named the MVP of the annual Quaker City Basketball Tournament.

Dunphy was also an assistant at La Salle for four seasons, first in 1979-80 and then for three years from 1985-88 until joining Penn as an assistant in the fall of '88. He took over the head job the following year.
