Georgia Tech (13-16) At Boston College (13-15)
GAME NOTES: The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets hope to remain in the win column when they travel to the Silvio O. Conte Forum to do battle with the ACC bottom- dwelling Boston College Eagles this afternoon. Georgia Tech has experienced its peaks and valleys this season, as was expected after losing two of its best players to the NBA. The Yellow Jackets had one of their biggest peaks the last time on the court, upsetting 24th-ranked Clemson, 80-75 in their home finale. The win marked the second in three games for GTech, who is now in a three-way tie for seventh place in the league standings. Boston College has simply collapsed late in the season. The Eagles have dropped 11 of their last 12 games, including five in a row. Their 74-61 loss to Miami-Florida put them in a three-way heat for dead last in the ACC with NC State and Virginia. BC has only beaten the Jackets twice in eight meetings, and tonight is the only time the two have met this campaign.
The Yellow Jackets used a team effort to withstand nationally-ranked Clemson on Thursday night. Five players notched double digits with Anthony Morrow's 16 points leading the way. Morrow drained 4-of-5 from behind the arc to increase his team-high average to 13.8 ppg. Jeremis Smith is the only consistent rebounder on the squad, pulling down 7.3 boards and putting up 10.7 points per game. He and Gani Lewis each deposited 13 points in the win, while Zack Peacock logged 12 points and eight boards off the bench. Matt Causey (10.3 ppg) only hit one field goal, but he dished out eight big assists in the highlight of Georgia Tech's season. D'Andre Bell rounded out the tops scorers on Thursday with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.
One of, if not the only bright spot for Boston College, has been Tyrese Rice. Rice leads the team in points (21.4 ppg) and assists (134) while hitting 85.1 percent from the free throw line. The guard can put up points in bunches, as he showed last weekend when he went off for a career-high 46 points in an upset bid against North Carolina. Rice didn't get much help in that affair, as has been the case much of the season. Rakim Sanders and Shamai Spears have proves serviceable second and third options. Sanders is recording 11.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, but he turned the ball over an explicable nine times in the loss to Miami-Florida on Wednesday. Spears is the top rebounder, collecting almost six boards per game to go along with 9.7 ppg. Corey Raji sunk 7-of-9 from the field in the latest loss to account for 16 points, but those performances have been few and far between.
It's hard to imagine Rice and BC losing the last home game of the year, but the Eagles have been reeling lately and can't seem to get on track. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, is coming off a big win and seems to have righted its ship, so the Yellow Jackets should come away with its first back-to-back victories since January.
