NCAA Game Summary - Elon Vs. College Of Charleston

Sunday, March 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - Montell Watson scored 15 points as upstart Elon continued its surprising run through the Southern Conference Tournament with a 75-61 win over College of Charleston in semifinal play at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Brett James tallied 13 points for seventh-seeded Elon (14-18), which reached the semis with an upset of second-seeded Chattanooga. Chris Long and Ola Atoyebi each scored a dozen points for the Phoenix, while Adam Constantine contributed eight points and 13 rebounds

The Phoenix will face a daunting task in Monday's championship game when they take on the top seed, 25th-ranked Davidson (25-6), which is riding the nation's longest win streak at 21 games and is the two-time defending Southern Conference Tournament champion.

Dustin Scott led all scorers with 22 points for the sixth-seeded Cougars (16-17), who upset third-seeded Georgia Southern in the quarters. Scott finished the game 10-for-11 from the field and grabbed eight boards, while Jeremy Simmons scored 11.

The Phoenix took a 3-2 just 41 seconds into the game and didn't trail the rest of the way, as Elon made 15-of-29 shots and 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in the first half to take a 39-34 lead into the locker room.

Elon continued to control the game after the break, stretching the lead to eight, 49-41, on Constantine's one-handed dunk with six minutes gone.

The teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes, but the Phoenix finally strung two straight buckets together and extended their advantage to 60-50 on a jumper from James with 6:50 to play.

The squads continued to go back-and-forth, with Constantine's putback slam putting Elon ahead 65-55 just before the 4 1/2 minute mark. The Cougars answered back, pulling within 67-61 when Jermaine Johnson converted a three- point play with 2:10 remaining.

But, the Cougars never got any closer as Elon scored the game's final eight points at the charity stripe to advance to the championship game for the first time since joining the conference in 2003.
