Long Beach State Penalized By NCAA
Thursday, March 6, 2008
Indianapolis, IN -- (Sports Network) - The NCAA announced Thursday that it has penalized the Long Beach State men's basketball team for multiple major and secondary violations that occurred from 2004-2006.The program will be on probation for three years, will lose one scholarship for each of the next two years, is prohibited from recruiting junior college players for two years, and will forfeit all victories in which ineligible players participated. The 49ers went 18-12 in the 2005-06 season. The violations committed by two members of the coaching staff occurred between late August 2004 and August 2005. Long Beach State's 2005-06 recruiting class included six junior college transfers, and all six were ineligible for admission to the university. Violations by the coaches include paying for registration for some of the junior college transfers, providing tutoring and transportation not allowed by NCAA guidelines, and making impermissible phone calls. One former Long Beach assistant coach allowed one player to take a correspondence exam without a proctor, then forged the name of a friend as the proctor on the exam. Both assistants involved with the violations also lied to investigators several times about their violations. The NCAA Division I Committee also criticized the university and former coach Larry Reynolds for failing to keep tabs on, or in Reynolds' case, ignoring the violations. Reynolds and his staff were fired after Long Beach reached the NCAA Tournament last season.
