Thursday, March 13, 2008
Indianapolis, IN -- (Sports Network) - Manny Harris led all scorers with 19 points as Michigan topped Iowa, 55-47, in Big Ten first-round action from Conseco Fieldhouse. DeShawn Sims posted 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolverines (10-21), who face top-seeded Wisconsin on Friday. Cyrus Tate had 16 points and pulled down a game-high 11 boards for the Hawkeyes (13-19), who ended their season with seven losses in their last nine games. Jake Kelly added 11 points in defeat. Back-to-back threes boosted Michigan to an early 10-4 lead, and when Harris drained an NBA-length trey followed by a jumper, the Wolverines went up 20-7 about nine minutes in. Sims made one from beyond the arc for a 25-11 Michigan lead with 6:46 to play in the half, then Iowa finally responded with an 11-5 burst to come within eight. After Michigan once again opened up a double-digit lead, a Justin Johnson three brought the Hawkeyes within 32-25. But Zack Gibson's tip-in at the buzzer made it a nine-point Michigan edge at intermission. The Wolverines reeled off the first five points of the second half to go up 39-25, and remained in control throughout the final 20 minutes. Iowa reduced its deficit to as little as eight, 44-36, with 6:40 remaining on a pair of Tate free throws. But a Harris jumper with 3:01 to play re-established a 14- point edge and Michigan held on from there.
