NCAA Game Summary - Illinois Vs. Penn State

Thursday, March 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Chester Frazier hit a layup with 3.8 seconds remaining to lift Illinois to a 64-63 victory over Penn State in the opening round of the Big Ten Conference Tournament.

Brian Randle scored 17 points for Illinois (14-18), which moved on to face second-seeded Purdue in the quarterfinal round on Friday. Trent Meacham added 14 points for the 10th-seeded Illini, who got 11 points from Demetri McCamey. Center Shaun Pruitt finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Talor Battle posted 17 points in the setback for Penn State (15-16). Stanley Pringle tallied 13 points for the seventh-seeded Nittany Lions and Andrew Jones contributed 10 points.

Penn State connected on 57.7 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half, but Illinois hit 6-of-12 three-pointers and 7-of-7 free throws en route to a 39-37 lead at intermission.

Over the final 20 minutes, the Nittany Lions shot a lowly 25 percent from the floor, including 3-of-15 from behind the arc. Illinois only hit eight shots from the field in the second half, but Frazier's late layup was clearly the biggest basket of the day for either team.

Illinois improved to 19-8 all-time in Big Ten Tournament games, and the program has two championships to its credit. The last title was captured in 2005.

Penn State has never won the Big Ten Tournament and is 5-11 all-time at the event.

The Illini avenged a pair of regular-season losses to the Nittany Lions and beat Penn State in the opening round of this tournament for the second straight year.
