Stony Brook (4-18) At (13) Boston College (19-5)
GAME NOTES: The Boston College Eagles will take a break from ACC action this evening, as they play host to the Stony Brook Seawolves from Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill. The Eagles won their third straight game and moved to 7-4 in ACC play with a 67-61 decision over Clemson at home on Saturday. The victory was BC's 19th, just one game away from reaching the 20-win plateau for the third straight season. The Seawolves have not had similar success in 2005-06, coming into this contest with a rather weak 4-18 overall mark. Stony Brook is a mere 2-10 in America East play this year and brings a three-game losing streak into Chestnut Hill after dropping a 76-58 affair to Binghamton over the weekend. This is just the third time these two teams have met on the hardwood, with BC winning both previous matchups. The last meeting took place in 2003, with the Eagles posting an 82-64 victory.
Stony Brook's veteran guard Bobby Santiago scored 20 points, including four three-pointers, but he got little support elsewhere in an 18-point defeat to Binghamton this past weekend. Mike Popoko came off the bench to add 13 points to the cause, but the team as a whole shot a mere .353 from the floor in the game. The remainder of the starting five didn't even combine to match Santiago's 20 points, as they finished with a collective 14 points in the loss. A lack of scoring has certainly been Stony Brook's primary problem this season, as the team is netting just 57.0 ppg, on .375 shooting. Still, there is some scoring depth on the roster, with three players averaging double figures. Mitchell Beauford leads the team with 14.8 ppg, followed by Popoko and Santiago with 10.4 and 10.3 ppg, respectively.
The Seawolves are way out of their league in this contest, as Boston College certainly has the kind of offensive weapons to post lopsided wins on any given night. The team is averaging a solid 75.8 ppg this season, getting it done on 485 shooting. Forwards Jared Dudley and Craig Smith make up one of the top frontcourt duos in the country, as both have the ability to dominate down low. Dudley leads the team in scoring (17.1 ppg) and ranks second in rebounding (7.0 rpg). Smith is shooting a team-best .571 from the floor and is netting 16.7 ppg, while pacing the squad on the glass (8.6 rpg). Veteran guard Sean Marshall (12.3 ppg) and freshman Tyrese Rice (9.6 ppg) provide aerial support and have combined for 73 of the team's 141 three-pointers to date. Four of Boston College's five starters were able to post double figures, as the home team held off a pesky Clemson squad this past weekend. Marshall led the way with 18 points, but Dudley may have made the biggest impact, as he scored 13 of his 16 total points in the second half to keep the Tigers at bay. Smith and Louis Hinnant finished things off with 11 points apiece. The Eagles shot the ball well in the game (.500) and only turned the ball over eight times, certainly keys to the victory.
The Seawolves are in way over their heads in this one. The Eagles have made a great showing of themselves in the tough ACC this year and while they aren't going to win a conference crown, they are definitely in the upper echelon. This outcome will never be in doubt, as BC should be able to empty its bench relatively early on.
