Delaware (13-15) At Towson (11-17)
GAME NOTES: Back-to-back winners for the first time since the second week of January, the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens try to make it three in a row this afternoon as they close out the regular season with a Colonial Athletic Association date against the Towson Tigers. On Wednesday night, the Hens hosted Hofstra at the Bob Carpenter Center and captured a 74-69 decision, giving UD a 9-8 mark in CAA play. As for the Tigers, they too played three nights ago, but in their case they were whipped by Georgia State on the road in a 79-63 final. The loss was the second in the last three games for Towson, which is now only 6-11 in conference. Delaware won the first meeting of the season back in early December with a 70-63 outing in Newark, meaning the Blue Hens now hold a 36-22 advantage in the all-time series.
Marc Egerson came within a single assist of a rare triple-double on Wednesday night as he recorded team-highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Hofstra at home. Also having a strong game was Herb Courtney who tallied 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, followed by Alphonso Dawson and Brian Johnson with 11 points apiece. Delaware shot 50 percent from the field and won the game at the free-throw line where it outscored the Pride, 19-13. The leading scorer in each of the last three games for the Hens, Egerson is now the top scorer overall on the season with his 13.9 ppg, a fraction of a point ahead of Courtney (13.8 ppg). Egerson is shooting just 38.2 percent from the field, but having missed the first seven games of the season he is still trying to find his groove. He leads the team on the glass with seven boards per game and is second in assists already with 63. As a unit, the Hens are knocking down only 40.3 percent from the floor, which is just one of the reasons why they are coming away with only 63.0 ppg at the moment.
Towson put itself in a hole in the first half by shooting only 2-of-11 from three-point range, eventually contributing to the unit's double-digit loss to GSU on the road. Tony Durant tried to keep the team on pace with 18 points in 30 minutes of play, while C.C. Williams dropped in 14 points and Josh Thornton had 13. The problem was that the reserves did little to help the cause, combining for a mere eight points on 3-of-16 from the field on the night. The team has seen a different high scorer in each of the last four games, which says a lot about how inconsistent the group can be from night to night. Junior Hairston remains the top scorer for the group with his 12.4 ppg and is also first in terms of rebounding (9.1 rpg) and blocked shots (48) and yet even with his efforts in the paint the team is being beaten on the glass by almost five rebounds per game. With the suspension of Rodney Spruill (12.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg), that leaves just one other active double-digit scorer for the Tigers in Thornton (12.2 ppg).
Just missing out on what would have been only the second triple-double in program history, Egerson continues to impress every time he takes the floor for the Blue Hens. Whether he can produce such numbers today is still up in the air, but the talent on the Delaware side should still rule over Towson no matter what Egerson's numbers are.
