NCAA Game Summary - Ohio University At Western Michigan

Saturday, October 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Western Michigan Broncos celebrated Homecoming with a 41-20 win over Mid-American Conference foe Ohio University at Waldo Stadium.

Tim Hiller had quite a day for WMU (5-1, 3-0 MAC), throwing for 347 yards and four TDs. Brandon West finished with 107 rushing yards and three touchdowns (one rushing, two receiving).

For Ohio (1-5, 0-2), Boo Jackson threw for 144 yards and three TDs, though he also threw two interceptions.

The Bobcats' first drive ended with an interception. Their defense held WMU to a three-and-out, which resulted in a 34-yard field goal by Broncos kicker John Potter.

Later in the opening quarter, the Broncos defense sacked Jackson in the end zone to take a 5-0 lead.

With less than five minutes remaining in the second quarter, Hiller was intercepted by OU's Jameson Hartke, who returned it down to the WMU three-yard line. Three plays later, Jackson tossed a touchdown pass to Andrew Mooney to put the Bobcats on top, 7-5.

From there, it was all Broncos. Hiller hooked up with Brandon West for an 18- yard touchdown pass in the final seconds before the half. However, Potter botched the extra-point attempt.

Potter kicked a 39-yarder at the 4:03 mark of the third quarter, giving the Broncos a 14-7 cushion.

OU's Chris Garrett fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and it was recovered by WMU. Four plays later, Hiller found Jamarko Simmons for a 16-yard touchdown pass.

With 12 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, West caught a screen pass from Hiller, and eluded the OU defense for a 45-yard touchdown to push the Broncos' lead to 27-7.

The Bobcats finally answered at the midway point of the quarter, when Jackson hit David Carter for a two-yard touchdown pass. The extra-point attempt was blocked.

Hiller continued to pick apart the Bobcats secondary, finding Matt Stevens for a 32-yard scoring strike to pad WMU's lead to 34-13 with 4:39 remaining.

Less than a minute later, Jackson struck back with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Donte Harden. But it was too little, too late.

On the third play of the ensuing drive, West scored his third touchdown on a 26-yard run to put the final touches on a big win for Broncos.

The victory was No. 500 for the WMU football program.
