Auburn, AL -- (Sports Network) - Brandon Cox's one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as 25th-ranked Auburn defeated Alabama, 17-10, in the "Iron Bowl" at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Cox finished the game 12-for-22 with just 117 yards and an interception while Ben Tate added 77 yards on 11 carries with a score for the Tigers (8-4, 5-3 SEC), who have won three of their last four games. Also, Auburn has won six straight against Alabama for the first time in school history. "It was a typical Iron Bowl," said Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. " There was a lot of defense. There was a lot of hard hitting. You had guys on both sides playing hard. We knew we would get a good shot from them after not playing very well last week. We knew we would get a good shot from them. They played well. They did a good job coaching. They did some things that kept us confused, but that's what this game is about. It all comes down to who wins in the trenches and we had a lot of guys that played hard." John Parker Wilson went 12-for-26 with 113 yards and had a rushing touchdown while Glen Coffee had 20 carries for 60 yards for the Crimson Tide (6-6, 4-4), who finished their regular season with four straight losses. "That was a good football game," said Alabama coach Nick Saban. "I am really proud of the way our players competed in the game. We did not start off really well, we played uptight and anxious. We dug a hole for ourselves and then we settled down and started playing pretty well. I am really proud of the way the guys competed. They kept coming back, we just couldn't convert any opportunities." Holding a 10-7 lead to start the second half, the Tigers got into field goal range on their first touch of the second half, but Wes Byrum missed a 43-yard attempt. The teams then exchanged punts several times, but Auburn got a 31-yard return from Robert Dunn to give the team the ball at the Alabama 44 with 8:48 to play. The Tigers took advantage of the good field position as the team made it a two-score game when Cox got into the end zone from a yard out for a 17-7 lead with 3:58 to play. Alabama got down the field in a hurry and got a 49-yard field goal from Leigh Tiffin to make it a 17-10 game with 2:11 to play. However, the Tigers recovered the onsides kick attempt and a 12-yard run from Brad Lester on 4th-and-1 sealed the victory. After holding the Crimson Tide on the first possession of the game, the Tigers got the ball back and put the first points of the game on the board. On 4th-and-1 at the Alabama 30, Cox bulled his way for two yards to move the chains. Tate then had four straight rushing plays with the last one coming from three yards out into the end zone for a 7-0 lead with 8:08 left in the first quarter. After again holding Alabama, Auburn took a 10-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal from Byrum with 3:12 left in the first. The big play of the drive was on the first snap as Cox hooked up with Rodgeriqus Smith for 31 yards to get the ball into Alabama territory. In a drive that spanned the first and second quarters, the Crimson Tide got on the board with an 11-play, 53-yard drive that was capped off on a Wilson two- yard run to make it a 10-7 game with 11:37 left in the first half. Alabama had a chance to tie the game late in the second quarter and got the ball to the Auburn 27, but a 44-yard field goal attempt from Tiffin was no good. The Crimson Tide again had an opportunity to score as Cox was intercepted by Rolando McClain, who took the ball 23 yards to the Auburn 19 with 37 seconds left in the first half. However, Wilson was intercepted by Jerraud Powers in the end zone and Auburn took a knee to end the half.Game Notes:Alabama holds a 38-33-1 series lead over Auburn...Lester finished the game with 98 yards on 22 carries...Smith had three receptions for 46 yards...Alabama totaled just 224 yards of offense while Auburn had 282.
