Tebow Wins Maxwell Award

POSTED: 10:01 pm EST December 6, 2007

(Sports Network) - Florida quarterback Tim Tebow captured the 2007 Maxwell Award, signifying the nation's top all-around player.

Tebow became the first player in Football Bowl Subdivision history, formerly Division I-A, to throw at least 20 touchdown passes and run for at least 20 scores in the same season. He has thrown for 3,132 yards with 29 touchdowns and just six interceptions, while rushing for 838 yards with 22 scores.

Tebow's signature game came against South Carolina as he ran for 120 yards with five touchdowns and threw for 304 yards with two more scores on November 10. His 22 rushing touchdowns are tied for third in the country and his passer rating of 177.9 is second-best.

Tebow also won the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, signifying the nation's top signal caller, earlier in the night.

The other finalists for the Maxwell Award were Arkansas running back Darren McFadden and Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon.

McFadden, last year's Heisman runner-up to Troy Smith, has run for 1,725 yards with 15 touchdowns in 12 games. He tied an SEC record with 321 rushing yards in a November 3 game against South Carolina and has averaged 143.8 yards per game -- fourth-best in the nation.

In addition, the junior has 21 receptions for 164 yards with another score, and has also thrown four touchdown passes this season. He also won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back for the second straight season.

Dixon had his season cut short by a torn ACL on November 15 against Arizona and his value has truly shown since, as Oregon went on to lose that game and two more without him in the lineup.

This season, the senior has thrown for 2,136 yards with 20 touchdowns and just four interceptions, while also running for 583 yards with nine scores. He is fourth in the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 161.2.

Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn won the Maxwell Award last year.

Tebow will now look to capture the Heisman Trophy on Saturday. The Maxwell winner has not won the Heisman in the same year since Ron Dayne of Wisconsin in 1999. Oklahoma quarterback Jason White won the Heisman in 2003, then captured the Maxwell Award the following year.
