Florida A&M Names Carter Football Coach

Florida A&M University named Rubin Carter head football coach during a Wednesday afternoon press conference.

Carter is the 14th head football coach in school history and brings extensive knowledge to the program, having been a collegiate All-American and NFL defensive lineman.

The 52-year-old Fort Lauderdale, FL native replaces former head coach Billy Joe, who was fired on June 14 for violating NCAA rules violations in recruiting and eligibility. Joe's career record was 237-108-4 over 31 seasons, including an 86-46 mark in 11 years with the Rattlers.

Assistant head coach/offensive coach Gregory Black and running backs coach Mario Allen were also dismissed with Joe.

Meanwhile, Carter joins the Rattlers' program from Temple, where he served as a defensive line coach this past season. In addition, he played 12 seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and was a 1974 All-American while attending the University of Miami.

Florida A&M University announced a shakeup in its athletics department Tuesday, as the school has fired football coach Rubin Carter and accepted the resignation of athletic director Nelson Townsend.
