Georgia President Pushes For Playoff System

POSTED: 8:25 pm EST January 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - University of Georgia president Michael Adams wrote a letter to NCAA president Dr. Myles Brand, pushing for a football playoff system.

The move came a day after LSU was crowned the Bowl Championship Series champion after its 38-24 win over Ohio State. The Bulldogs were left out of the BCS title game, but finished second in the final Associated Press college football poll. Georgia routed previously unbeaten Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, 41-10.

Adams, the chairman of the NCAA executive committee, said he has been "troubled by the commercial influence over how the college football season is played out, particularly with regard to the postseason bowls." Adams also said television networks are too powerful in deciding which teams play in each game. He also called the BCS a "beauty contest largely stage-managed by the networks."

In his proposal, Adams asked Brand to create a committee from the NCAA's Division I Board of Directors to look into possibly staging a championship tournament in January, following the bowl season. Adams said the winners of the four major bowl games - Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta - would play semifinals the second Saturday in January, with the championship game the following weekend. Adams also said he would favor reducing the number of regular season games from 12 to 11.

"For some 20 years, I have opposed a football playoff system, largely for academic reasons," Adams said in a statement. "We at the University of Georgia have one of the few institutions in the country with both a top-20 public academic program and a top-20 athletic program, and I want to keep it that way. For that reason, I remain concerned about any move to lengthen the football season into a second semester. I believe the season already is too long and demands too much of athletes and the universities that serve them. But this years experience with the BCS forces me to the conclusion that the current system has lost public confidence and simply does not work. It is undercutting the sportsmanship and integrity of the game."

Brand responded with a prepared statement on the NCAA's Web site and said he would bring the Division I Board of Directors Adams' request at its meeting in Nashville on January 14.

"The structure of postseason football in the Football Bowl Subdivision rests with the presidents of those institutions," Brand said. "The BCS has produced exciting games since it came into existence, but there may be a feeling among some presidents, though not all, that there is need for structural changes. This is an issue that will be decided through presidential leadership.

"The NCAA national office will be supportive of the presidents in whatever decisions they make and it will facilitate discussions that would assist them."
