Saturday, December 29, 2007
Houston, TX -- (Sports Network) - Justin Watts had a touchdown as TCU scored 13 unanswered points for a 20-13 victory over Houston to win the second-annual Texas Bowl at Reliant Stadium. Watts finished with 46 yards on 12 carries while Andy Dalton connected on 21- of-30 passes for 249 yards and an interception and added a rushing touchdown for the Horned Frogs (8-5), who are 4-3 in bowl games under seventh-year head man Gary Patterson. Case Keenum went 23-for-38 with 335 yards and a touchdown while Donnie Avery had 10 catches for 120 yards for the Cougars (8-5), who have lost eight straight bowl games and have not won in a bowl since a 35-0 victory over Navy in 1980. After exchanging punts to start the third quarter, TCU tied the game, 10-10, with a nine-play, 30-yard drive that was capped on a 29-yard field goal from Chris Manfredini with 6:30 left in the third. Brian Bonner returned a punt 31 yards to the Houston 42 to start the drive. The Horned Frogs then held the Cougars to a three-and-out on the next possession and, after getting the ball back, took their first lead of the game. A 13-play, 80-yard drive was finished when Wells took a handoff in the shotgun and raced into the end zone from seven yards out for a 17-10 lead just 32 seconds into the fourth quarter. Houston got a 32-yard return from Anthony Aldridge on the ensuing kickoff, but TCU held them to a three-and-out and got the ball back at its own 20-yard line. TCU got into Houston territory on the first play of the drive on a 32-yard catch by Ervin Dickerson. The team had a 1st-and-goal at the six-yard line, but were unable to get it into the end zone and had to settle for a 36-yard field goal from Manfredini for a 20-10 lead with 7:28 left in the game. The Cougars got into scoring position on their next possession as T.J. Lawrence lined up for a 48-yard field goal with under six minutes to play. He had the distance, but the ball just missed the right upright. Lawrence redeemed himself on the Cougars next possession as he drilled a 32- yard field goal to make it a 20-13 game with 1:57 to play. Houston was unable to recover the onsides kick, but held TCU and got the ball back. However, the team was pinned at its own two-yard line with 1:32 to play and no timeouts. The Cougars got down to the TCU 19-yard line, but on the last play of the game Chase Ortiz nailed Keenum as the quarterback released the ball to seal the win for the Horned Frogs. It appeared the first quarter was going to be a scoreless affair, but the Cougars got the ball back with 44 seconds left in the quarter and struck quickly. Keenum scrambled back and forth and from the right side lofted a pass down the right sideline to Andre Kohn, who made the catch in stride and took it into the end zone from 67 yards for a 7-0 lead with just eight seconds left. The Horned Frogs, though, responded on their ensuing possession as they methodically marched 75 yards in 11 plays and tied the game when Dalton punched the ball into the end zone from three yards out with 10:24 left in the first half. Houston, though, got the final points of the first half as Lawrence hit a 39- yard field goal with just 10 seconds left on the clock for a 10-7 heading into the locker room.Game Notes:Rutgers defeated Kansas State, 37-10, in the inaugural Texas Bowl last December...Houston holds a 13-12 edge all-time, but the Horned Frogs have closed the gap with eight straight victories in the series.
