Saturday, September 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Shea Smith ran for 93 yards and three scores and the Air Force Falcons held off the Houston Cougars for a 31-28 victory in non- conference action at Ford Stadium in Dallas.

Smith didn't complete any of his seven pass attempts, but he paced the ground attack of Air Force (3-0), which gained 380 yards in the win. Savie Stephens had 60 rushing yards and a score on 14 carries, as the Falcons won the first- ever meeting between the two schools.

Case Keenum guided the Cougars (1-2) in defeat with 362 yards and four touchdowns on 34-of-57 pass attempts. He was picked off once, but also led the ground game with 75 yards on 10 carries. Tyron Carrier hauled in eight balls for 91 yards in the losing cause, while Mark Hafner pulled down seven passes for 64 yards and three scores.

The Cougars kicked off the scoring midway through the first quarter with a 14- yard touchdown pass from Keenum to Hafner.

Air Force got on the board with a 30-yard field goal by Ryan Harrison late in the opening period.

Early in the second quarter, the Falcons took a 10-7 lead behind a two-yard touchdown run by Smith.

A seven-yard touchdown run by Stephens late in the second quarter gave Air Force a 17-7 lead at the break.

Smith scored on a one-yard and six-yard run in the third frame and the Falcons held a 31-7 lead.

Houston, though, would rally and it received a 25-yard scoring play from Keenum to Andre Kohn late in the third period.

Hafner pulled in a pair of seven-yard touchdown passes from Keenum in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars would get no closer in a 31-28 setback.

The game was originally scheduled to take place at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium in Houston, but alternate plans were made due to Hurricane Ike and the game was moved up in time and to SMU's Ford Stadium.
