Saturday, November 17, 2007
Boise, ID -- (Sports Network) - Taylor Tharp threw for 282 yards and four touchdowns, as 17th-ranked Boise State crushed Idaho, 58-14, at Bronco Stadium. Tharp was 22-of-31 passing and added 30 yards rushing for the Broncos (10-1, 7-0 WAC), who have won nine straight and are tied for first in the WAC standings with unbeaten Hawaii heading into next week's battle with the Warriors. "It is the game that we circled at the beginning of the year as one that we knew was going to be a tough one," Tharp said of next week's matchup with Hawaii. "It comes down to doing our deal and not worrying about Hawaii but coming out and playing at the high level we are capable of playing at." Austin Pettis caught eight passes for 139 yards with three touchdowns while Ian Johnson ran for 108 yards and two scores for Boise State, which has won 43 straight regular-season home games. "We talked a long time this entire season about being a second half team, no matter how the first half goes," said BSU head coach Chris Petersen. "We almost want to pride ourselves on that aspect of the game more than the first half. To those kids credit they came out and played harder than they did the first half and that was pleasing to see." Deonte Jackson had 24 carries for 84 yards and a score for the Vandals (1-10, 0-7), who have lost nine straight. Nathan Enderle struggled behind center, completing just 8-of-23 passes for 182 yards. Boise State opened the scoring early and grabbed the lead less then three minutes in after Johnson rumbled into the end zone from seven yards out. The score was set up by a 56-yard catch by Pettis. Early in the second quarter, the Broncos upped their lead to 14-0 after Tharp found Richie Brockel wide open in the end zone for a short two-yard touchdown pass. With 9:17 to go in the second, Idaho got on the board as Jackson ran in from eight yards out. Jackson's score capped a time-consuming 12-play, 80-yard drive. A 34-yard field goal by Kyle Brotzman with just under five minutes to play in the second stanza extended Boise State's lead to 17-7. The Vandals then managed to pull within three points after Eddie Williams carried the ball over the goal line with 3:10 to play in the first half. Lee Smith set up the score with a leaping 58-yard catch-and-run that put Idaho on the six-yard line. The Broncos, though, were able to take a 24-14 advantage into the locker room as Pettis hauled in a 10-yard touchdown toss from Tharp with just 35 seconds ticks left in the first half. Three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter gave the Broncos a comfortable cushion. Boise State made it 31-14 with 8:15 on the third-quarter clock as Tharp connected with Pettis for a five-yard touchdown pass. Pettis set up his own score with a 20-yard reception that put his team on the Idaho five-yard line. Less then two minutes later, Tharp and Titus Young hooked up for a 58-yard touchdown to make it 38-14. Johnson's second score of the day, a 15-yard run with 2:12 left in the third, made it a 31-point advantage for BSU. The rout continued in the final frame as backup signal caller Bush Hamdan threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Childs about 4 1/2 minutes in and later connected with Pettis on a 17-yard score to complete the scoring.Game Notes:Boise State has now won 34 straight conference games at home...The Broncos lead the all-time series at 19-17-1...Childs finished with seven catches for 84 yards...Boise State ended with 556 total yards of offense...Jackson had three catches for 53 yards.
