NCAA Game Summary - Maryland At Virginia

Sunday, October 5, 2008

(Sports Network) - Marc Verica threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another, as the Virginia Cavaliers blanked the Maryland Terrapins, 31-0, in an ACC clash at Scott Stadium.

Verica passed for 226 yards on 25-of-34 attempts, as Virginia (2-3, 1-1 ACC) snapped a two-game slide. It was a nice rebound by Verica, who threw four picks and lost a fumble in a 31-3 setback at Duke last weekend. Coming into the game, Virginia had passed for no touchdowns against nine interceptions. Kevin Ogletree was the team's main target, pulling down five balls for 100 yards and two scores. Cedric Peerman paced the ground attack with 110 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while Mikell Simpson added 77 yards on 14 attempts.

Chris Turner converted on 20-of-34 tosses for 223 yards and a pick for Maryland (4-2, 1-1), which had its three-game win streak snapped. The Terps managed just 302 total yards, including only 79 on the ground in the setback.

The Cavs got on the board late in the first quarter, when Verica tossed a 51- yard touchdown pass to Ogletree.

Verica struck again with a five-yard touchdown run just under five minutes into the second quarter.

With 11 seconds remaining before the half, Virginia made it a 21-0 game behind a 15-yard scoring strike from Verica to Ogletree.

Yannick Reyering nailed a 32-yard field goal just over three minutes into the second half and Virginia held a 24-0 lead.

The Cavs added to their advantage late in the third quarter courtesy of a nine-yard touchdown run by Peerman.

Virginia, which came into the game averaging just 251.2 total ypg, gained 427 yards in the victory.
