NCAA Game Summary - Miami-Florida At Boston College

POSTED: 2:23 am EST November 25, 2007

(Sports Network) - Matt Ryan threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns as 15th-ranked Boston College defeated Miami-Florida for the first time in the last 23 years with a 28-14 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Ryan ended 26-of-43 with a pair of interceptions for the Eagles (10-2, 6-2 ACC), who had lost 15 straight to the Hurricanes with their last victory over Miami coming in 1984 on Doug Flutie's legendary miracle pass.

"To beat those guys, finally. We talked this week about breaking through that glass ceiling and not being able to get there," said BC head coach Jeff Jagodzinski. "You couldn't beat Miami, you couldn't do this and you couldn't do that. But now we've done it and once you break through that, you can really start building on that."

Rich Gunnell had nine catches for 135 yards for Boston College, which had already clinched the Atlantic Division title in the ACC and will play Virginia Tech in the title game on December 1.

Andre Callender added 96 yards rushing with a score on 15 carries in the victory.

"We've done a good job all year of answering on offense when we've needed to and we've done a real good job of shutting people down on defense when we needed to and we did that today," Ryan said. "We're happy to walk away with a win but we're turning over and we're getting ready for the ACC Championship now."

Kyle Wright was 23-of-42 for 198 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for the Hurricanes (5-7, 2-6), who suffered their first losing season in 10 years and just the third in the last 27 years.

Sam Shields and Ryan Hill each caught a touchdown pass for Miami, which is also not bowl eligible for the first time in the last 10 seasons.

Trailing by a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, the Hurricanes tied the game at 14-14 after Wright threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Shields near the left side of the end zone with 11:44 to play. Shields' score ended an eight- play, 41-yard drive.

Ryan and the Eagles quickly responded and regained their lead just 23 seconds later. On the first play of a short two-play drive, Ryan completed a 50-yard pass down the right sideline to Gunnell. Following that big play, Clarence Megwa then made a leaping 20-yard reception in the end zone to make it 21-14.

After BC's defense stopped the 'Canes on the ensuing possession, Callender ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run up the middle on a draw play to push the lead to 28-14 with just under 8 1/2 minutes remaining.

Boston College's defense was up to the task the remainder of the way and never allowed the Hurricanes a chance to score and get back into the contest.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Eagles managed to find the end zone with 8:10 to play in the second stanza as Ryan lofted an eight-yard touchdown pass to L.V. Whitworth. Boston College went 80 yards on eight plays during the scoring drive.

An interception by DeLeon Gause inside Miami territory late in the first half set up the Eagles next score. With just 29 seconds left on the clock, Ryan fired a five-yard touchdown pass over the middle of the end zone to Kevin Challenger to extend the lead to 14-0.

About three minutes into the third quarter, the Hurricanes got on the board after Hill hauled in a 23-yard pass near the left side of the end zone while falling down.

Game Notes:

Coming into Saturday's game, the Hurricanes had won 23 of the 26 all-time meetings with Boston College...The Eagles racked up 462 yards of total offense with 369 coming through the air...The Hurricanes ended their season with three straight losses...Ryan has 28 TD passes this season, breaking the mark Flutie had in 1984.
