NCAA Game Summary - Rutgers At Navy

Saturday, September 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - Matt Harmon kicked a 24-yard field goal with 2:04 remaining, as the Navy Midshipmen escaped with a 23-21 win over the visiting Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Eric Kettani carried 20 times for a career-high 133 yards and a TD for Navy (2-2). Shun White, who entered the game as the nation's leading rusher, finished with 85 yards on the ground.

Jourdan Brooks did his own damage on the ground for Rutgers (0-3), carrying 22 times for 134 yards and two TDs.

Navy kicker Matt Harmon's 36-yard field goal midway through the first quarter gave the Mids a 3-0 lead, but Rutgers answered with a 12-play, 66-yard drive, punctuated by Joe Martinek's five-yard touchdown run.

In the waning moments of the first quarter, Harmon kicked a 26-yarder to pull Navy to within 7-6.

But with five minutes remaining in the second quarter, Rutgers blocked a punt at the Navy 15-yard line. Three plays later, Brooks found the end zone on a six-yard run.

Navy quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada connected with Tyree Barnes for a 22-yard touchdown pass at the 11:37 mark of the third quarter, making it a 14-13 game.

Later in the quarter, the Mids grabbed a 20-14 lead on Kettani's two-yard touchdown run.

But Rutgers responded with a 12-play, 84-yard drive that chewed 7:15 off the clock. Brooks capped it off with a 12-yard touchdown run with 7:38 to play in regulation.

However, Navy was able to drive methodically down the field, setting the stage for Harmon's game-sealing kick.

While Navy boasts the nation's top rushing attack, Rutgers managed to keep things close by putting up 206 yards (6.2 ypc) on the ground. Rutgers is 0-3 for the first time since 1999.
