NCAA Game Summary - North Carolina At North Carolina State

POSTED: 6:37 pm EST November 10, 2007

(Sports Network) - Jamelle Eugene carried the ball 32 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns to lead the North Carolina State Wolf Pack to a 31-27 win over the North Carolina Tar Heels in an ACC showdown at Carter- Finley Stadium.

Quarterback Daniel Evans also had a big day for the Wolfpack (5-5, 3-3 ACC), completing 26-of-42 pass attempts for 229 yards and a touchdown.

The Tar Heels (3-7, 2-4) were led by their defense which converted two interceptions into touchdowns. Quarterback T. J. Yates paced the UNC offense completing 22-of-42 pass attempts for 241 yards, but also threw two interceptions in the loss.

The Wolfpack took an early 3-0 lead on a 40-yard field goal from Steven Hauschka.

NC State increased its lead to 10-0 late in the first quarter on a four-yard touchdown run from Eugene.

Eugene made it a 17-0 game early in the second quarter, when he plowed his way in from five yards out for his second score of the afternoon.

The Tar Heels finally got on the board in the second quarter, when Charles Brown picked off an errant Evans pass and returned it 92 yards for a touchdown.

The Tar Heels made it a 17-10 game just minutes later, on a 47-yard field goal by Connor Barth.

The Wolfpack took a two touchdown lead late in the first half, when Evans found Marcus Stone from 14 yards out, pushing the lead to 24-10 at the break.

UNC opened up the second half scoring with some trickery, as fullback Bobby Rome threw a 50-yard touchdown strike to Brandon Tate to make it a 24-17 game.

The Tar Heels continue to chip away at the Wolfpack lead, when Barth hit a 27- yard field goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

UNC's defense fed off the momentum, as Kendric Burney picked off Evans and returned it 72 yards to pay dirt, giving the Tar Heels a 27-24 advantage.

However, it was the Wolfpack who would have the last laugh, as Eugene scored from one yard out in the final minutes of regulation to give NC State the 31-27 victory.

NC State dominated the Tar Heels in the trenches out rushing UNC, 167-12, on the afternoon.
