GAME NOTES: The North Texas Mean Green try once again to secure their first win of the season when the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns visit Fouts Field in Denton this Saturday for a Sun Belt Conference tussle. Last weekend at UL- Monroe, the Cajuns set a school record for total offense (728 yards) for the second time in a three-week span. So, the Mean Green will have their hands full in this one. This week's tilt wraps up a three-game road swing for the Ragin' Cajuns, who return home to face Arkansas State next Saturday. As for the Mean Green, they are still trying to pick up the pieces following last weekend's 42-10 loss at the hands of Florida International. The North Texas defense must find a way to keep opposing offenses from lighting up the scoreboard at will. Two weeks ago at Rice, the Mean Green was torched for 77 points. North Texas owns an 8-4 edge in the head-to-head series with ULL, although the Cajuns won last year's meeting in Lafayette, 39-28. UL-Lafayette senior running back Tyrell Fenroy had another monster day last week against UL-Monroe, rushing for 297 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries (14.9 ypc). Two of his touchdown runs covered 80 yards or more, and he had a fourth touchdown run that was negated by a holding penalty. One of his 80-yard bursts came with five minutes to go, just one play after ULM pulled to within 37-35. He needs just 30 yards to break the SBC rushing record. The NCAA's active career leader in rushing yards (4,021), Fenroy is on pace to become just the seventh player in NCAA history with four 1,000-yard seasons. Clearly, he is heavily featured in the Cajun offense, and he will be the focal point of the North Texas defense as a result. UL-Lafayette's defense remains a work in progress, considering the team is giving up an average of 35.6 ppg. The most glaring weakness is in the running game, where the Cajuns are allowing a whopping 257 ypg on the ground. They rank second-to-last in the nation in that department. It was more of the same last week, with UL-Monroe racking up 241 yards on the ground. The Cajuns were a bit sharper against the pass, as they came up with four sacks and allowed just 142 yards through the air. On the season, Derik Keyes paces the defense with 38 tackles (three TFLs) and three pass breakups. Nate Douglas has a team- high three sacks. The North Texas offense recently suffered a blow when second-leading receiver Sam Dibrell (24 receptions, 233 yards) left the team for personal reasons after four games. His departure puts a bigger onus on senior wideout Casey Fitzgerald (41 receptions, 397 yards, one TD) to make plays in the passing game. Currently, Fitzgerald ranks fifth in the nation with 8.2 grabs per game and is coming off a 10-catch, 120-yard performance against FIU. Quarterback Giovanni Vizza threw for 274 yards, but he was also intercepted three times. Clearly, when the defense is already yielding more points than any other team in the nation, turnovers become magnified. Coach Todd Dodge needs his quarterback to cut down on the mistakes immediately. While the Mean Green will deploy eight men in the box to try and slow Fenroy, they must also account for ULL quarterback Michael Desormeaux, who is averaging a hefty 117 rushing yards per game. Although North Texas is winless in five games, the defense has done a decent job against the run by allowing 160 yards per game. Of course, with the secondary having its fair share of problems, opponents have been more than willing to put the running game aside and attack down field. The Mean Green are allowing an astounding 52.2 ppg. On paper, this has the potential to get ugly in a hurry. With the defense giving up points in bunches, the offense is forced to fight an uphill battle almost right from the opening kickoff. UL-Lafayette enters this weekend with the nation's top-ranked rushing offense (331 ypg) after the team's 556-yard rushing outburst last week. As the adage goes, if it's not broken, don't fix it. Expect a heavy dose of Fenroy in this one. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: UL-Lafayette 56, North Texas 21Saturday, October 11th, 7:00 p.m. (et).
