Sunday, September 7, 2008
Memphis, TN -- (Sports Network) - Chris Jammer returned an interception 69 yards for a touchdown with just 11 seconds left, as the Rice Owls came from behind to defeat to the Memphis Tigers 42-35 in a Conference USA tilt at the Liberty Bowl. The Owls (2-0, 2-0 CUSA) trailed 35-20 midway through the fourth quarter, but rallied for three straight touchdowns, including the game winner by Jammer, to stun Memphis and pick up their second straight league victory. Chase Clement was picked off twice for Rice, but he more than made up for that by throwing for 318 yards and a score and rushing for a team-high 80 yards and two more touchdowns. James Casey was his favorite target with 11 catches for 208 yards, while Jarett Dillard added eight receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown. Arkelon Hall completed 29-of-38 pass attempts for 373 yards and three scores for Memphis (0-2, 0-1), but he accounted for two interceptions. Maurice Jones was on the receiving end of nine of those passes that led to 173 yards and a pair of scores. A 24-yard field goal by Rice's Clark Fangmeier marked the only points of the opening quarter. Memphis got on the board just over five minutes into the second quarter, as Hall threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Jones. Hall connected with Earnest Williams from 10 yards out late in the first half, giving the Tigers a 14-3 advantage at the break. Rice jumped out quickly in the second half, as it opened the third quarter with a 10-play, 77-yard drive that was capped by a James Casey seven-yard touchdown run. Fangmeier than hit a 36-yard field goal to pull the Owls within a point at 14-13. Charlie Jones, though, posted back-to-back touchdowns to push Memphis ahead 28-13. His first score came from 15 yards out late in the third quarter, while the second one was a one-yard plunge early in the fourth quarter. Clement countered for Rice with an eight-yard touchdown run. Memphis had an answer of its own and extended its lead to 35-20 behind a 39- yard scoring strike from Hall to Jones with just under nine minutes left to play. The Owls, however, would rally, starting with a five-yard touchdown pass from Clement to Dillard. Clement then scurried nine yards for a score to cap a 7- play, 94-yard drive. A successful two-point conversion attempt knotted the score at 35-35 with just over a minute remaining in regulation. With Memphis on the move, Jammer picked off a pass and returned it 69 yards for the game-winning touchdown with just 11 ticks left on the clock. Despite the loss, the Tigers outgained the Owls 523-430 on the night.
