Neutral Record: Rutgers 0-0, Navy 0-0. Conference Record: Rutgers 0-0, Navy 0-0. Series Record: Rutgers leads, 11-10-1 GAME NOTES: The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will try to grab their first win of the 2008 campaign, but to do so Rutgers must head to Annapolis to take on the Navy Midshipmen at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The new season for Rutgers has gotten off to a bumpy start, as the team has dropped its first two contests, losing to Fresno State (24-7) and North Carolina (44-12). Next the Knights will head home to battle Morgan State before taking on the West Virginia Mountaineers in their Big East opener. As for the Middies, they opened their season with a convincing 41-13 victory over Towson. However, since then the team has struggled, losing two straight games to Ball State (35-23) and Duke (41-31). The Middies have a long history against teams from the Big East, but unfortunately in 104 games against opponents from that conference, Navy is just 45-55-4. This has been a tightly contested series, with the Scarlet Knights holding a slim 11-10-1 edge over Navy. Rutgers however, has won the last three matchups, including a convincing, 41-24 win over the Middies this past season. It is still early in the season, but the Knights have been unimpressive offensively. The team is averaging 376.0 total ypg, but that has led to a meager 9.5 ppg. The ground game has been the major problem for this unit, as the team is posting just 123.0 ypg on 3.9 ypc. This past weekend the Scarlet Knights racked up 383 yards total yards, but finished the game with just 12 points. Mason Robinson rushed for 82 yards, while Jourdan Brooks added 42 yards on just seven carries. The passing attack was less effective, as Mike Teel threw for 243 yards and one score, but also tossed three interceptions. Teel has been dreadful in the early going, throwing for just 506 yards and one touchdown against five interceptions. Not much has gone right for the Knights on the defensive side of the football, as the team has struggled against the run, and the pass. Opponents are pounding Rutgers for 181.5 ypg on the ground, while also racking up 218.5 ypg through the air. The woes for Rutgers continued last time out, as the defense surrendered 378 total yards, including 221 yards through the air. The Knights were unable to make the big plays, allowing the Tar Heels to convert on 8- of-16 third down attempts and all five of their red zone chances. Ryan D'Imperio was a mad man on the field against North Carolina, collecting 13 tackles in the loss. The Middies are a one-trick pony, however there is not another team in the nation that can duplicate that trick. Navy is currently leading the nation with an outstanding 370.3 ypg on the ground. This past weekend the Middies were surprisingly held to just 207 rushing yards, which is an achievement for any defense. The Middies finished with 357 total yards of offense, but the team struggled when it counted most, converting on just 4-of-13 third down attempts. Shun White led the way for Navy with 112 yards and one touchdown on just 15 totes, and now has a team-best 588 yards and four scores on the season. The defense for Navy has one glaring hole after three games, and that is the unit's pass defense, or lack thereof. Navy has been torched through the air on the season, allowing a whopping 324.3 passing ypg. The Middies only have five sacks in three games, and are allowing the opposition to convert on 61 percent of their third down chances. Duke continued to torture the Middies with the pass in Navy's last game, as the Blue Devils racked up 317 yards through the air. Overall the defense allowed 396 yards, and that led to 21 first downs and 41 points. Corey Johnson led the defense with nine tackles in the loss and also added one TFL. Rutgers had trouble stopping the run this season, and that could spell trouble for the winless Knights, who will have their hands full with the run happy Middies.
