Saturday, October 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - Pat White threw for just 137 yards, but also tossed two touchdown passes, as the West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 24-17, in a Big East battle at the Milan Puskar Stadium.

White also led the ground game for WVU (3-2, 1-0 BigEast) with 59 yards, while Noel Devine rushed for just 55 yards on 19 carries.

Mike Teel threw for 170 yards and one touchdown for Rutgers (1-4, 0-1), but the quarterback completed just 14-of-32 passes in the loss. Kenny Britt did most of the damage for Rutgers, as the wide out grabbed 12 passes for 151 yards.

The Mountaineers took a 7-0 advantage midway through the opening quarter when White connected with Tyler Urban on a 25-yard touchdown pass.

WVU's lead was pushed to 10-0 when Pat McAfee nailed a 40-yard kick early in the second stanza.

Rutgers finally got on the scoreboard midway through the second stanza when San San Te nailed a 23-yard field goal.

With just under a minute remaining in the first half White connected with Jock Sanders for a 14-yard scoring strike, pushing WVU's lead to 17-3.

However, the Scarlet Knights wasted little time responding, as Teel found the end zone on a five-yard run, cutting Rutgers' deficit to 17-10 as the two teams went into the intermission.

Midway through the third quarter the Mountaineers added to their lead, as Jarrett Brown plunged into the end zone from the one yard line.

The Scarlet Knights used a 14-yard TD pass from Teel to Tim Brown midway through the final frame, but Rutgers comeback bid would end there, as WVU held on for the seven-point win.
