NCAA Game Summary - Stanford At Notre Dame

Saturday, October 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jimmy Clausen threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns, as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish upended the Stanford Cardinal, 28-21, in non-league action at Notre Dame Stadium.

Michael Floyd paced the Irish (4-1) receivers with 115 yards and a touchdown on five receptions. Armando Allen had seven catches for 66 yards and two TDs (one rushing), although the Notre Dame rushing attack continues to struggle.

For Stanford (3-3), Tavita Pritchard completed 18-of-28 passes for 182 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He was also sacked five times. Toby Gerhart, who was knocked out of last week's game with a concussion, finished with 104 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Clausen got the Irish on the scoreboard first with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Allen midway through the opening quarter.

Stanford tied it up on Gerhart's one-yard touchdown plunge at the 10:51 mark of the second quarter, which capped a 14-play, 95-yard drive.

Notre Dame answered with a 73-yard drive, punctuated by Allen's three-yard touchdown run.

The Irish scored again on the third play of their next drive, when Clausen found Floyd for a 48-yard scoring strike.

They made it 21 unanswered points when Clausen hit Kyle Rudolph for a 16-yard touchdown pass at the 4:30 mark of the third quarter.

The Cardinal made things interesting in the fourth quarter. They put together a 72-yard drive, resulting in a one-yard touchdown pass from Pritchard to Jim Dray to make it a 28-14 game with 10 minutes to play.

At the six-minute mark, Pritchard hooked up with Doug Baldwin to make it a one-score game. But after Notre Dame's next drive stalled, punter Eric Maust pinned Stanford back at its own three-yard line with 3:23 to play. The offense failed to get a first down, and the Irish were able to run the clock down.

The Irish entered the game with the nation's 103rd-ranked rushing offense (108.75 ypg), and they managed just 83 yards (3.1 ypc) in this one.
