Saturday, November 17, 2007
East Hartford, CT -- (Sports Network) - Tyler Lorenzen completed 16-of-24 passes for 213 yards and a touchdown, as 25th-ranked Connecticut crushed the Syracuse Orange, 30-7, at Rentschler Field.Donald Brown ran for 99 yards and a score on 22 carries for the Huskies (9-2, 5-1 Big East), who bounced back from last week's loss at Cincinnati. A win at West Virginia next Saturday would give the Huskies the conference title. "Who would have ever thought that after 11 games, being 9-2, that this team would be playing for the right for the Big East Championship next week?" said Connecticut coach Randy Edsall. "Probably nobody in America ever thought that except for the guys in that locker room. I'm just glad that they've allowed me to be a small part of it. It's a tremendous win and there's not much else I can say." Andrew Robinson and Cameron Dantley combined for just 120 yards through the air for Syracuse (2-9, 1-5), which has lost three in a row and will wrap up another dismal season under Greg Robinson next week against Cincinnati. "It was a tough game," said Syracuse defensive end Jameel McClain, referring to the team's ninth loss of the season. "It was a tough loss. It's a tough loss for the seniors. It's a tough loss for the program. We wanted to bring more to the table but obviously, that's not what happened. It's a bad feeling." The Huskies scored first on a 63-yard pass from Lorenzen to Terence Jeffers with 9:52 left in the opening quarter. The long toss capped a five-play, 95- yard drive. After an exchange of punts, the Huskies recovered a Syracuse fumble, which led to a one-yard touchdown run by Andre Dixon with 1:10 remaining in the first. Dixon would go on to finish the game with 63 yards on 15 carries. Brown then finished a seven-play, 77-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run with 7:04 left in the first half. Lorenzen was 10-of-15 for 142 yards and a touchdown in the first half as the Huskies went into the locker room with a 21-0 lead. Following a missed field goal by the Orange, Connecticut got on the scoreboard in the third quarter with a 33-yard field goal by Tony Ciaravino with 6:07 remaining to make the score 24-0. Syracuse was stopped at the Connecticut three-yard line when Robert Vaughn intercepted an Andrew Robinson pass in the end zone and ran it out to the four. The UConn defense got into the scoring in the fourth quarter when Danny Lansanah picked off a Dantley pass and raced 49 yards to the end zone. The point after was blocked, leaving the Huskies with a comfortable 30-0 cushion. The Orange avoided the shutout with 7:56 left in the contest when Dantley connected with Mike Williams on a two-yard touchdown pass to finish a drive of 16 plays and 74 yards.
