No. 17 Penn State Crushes The Orange

Saturday, September 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Daryll Clark and Pat Devlin each threw two touchdown passes to lead the No. 17 Nittany Lions to a romp of Syracuse, 55- 13, at the Carrier Dome.

Clark finished with 163 yards through the air on 10-of-21 passing while Devlin completed 8-of-13 attempts for 130 yards. Jordan Norwood caught five passes for 113 yards and two scores, and Deon Butler had two touchdowns on seven receptions and 110 yards.

Evan Royster had a 100-yard rushing performance and Stephfon Green added a rushing score in the victory for Penn State (3-0).

Cameron Dantley went 13-of-32 for 110 yards and a touchdown while throwing an interception. Donte Davis caught three passes for 40 yards, and Marcus Sales scored the only touchdown for the Orange (0-3).

After Syracuse fumbled the ball away on its first drive, Clark threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Norwood on the next play to give Penn State a 7-0 lead only 1:20 into the game.

On the next Lions drive, Clark led an 11-play 46-yard march -- going 3-for-3 on third down -- culminating with a 17-yard acrobatic touchdown grab from Butler for a 14-0 lead with 7:45 left in the quarter.

Dan Lawlor capped a 10-play 64-yard drive for Penn State with a one-yard touchdown run to give the Lions a 21-0 cushion with 2:54 remaining in the opening frame.

Devlin took over for Clark early in the second quarter and led Penn State 65 yards in only three plays, finishing the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Butler to make it 28-0 with 12:11 left in the half.

Syracuse finally got on the board with 8:11 to go in the half. A 10-play, 45- yard drive ended with a Patrick Shadle 44-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to 25.

The Lions came right back, though, as Devlin tossed an easy 24-yard touchdown pass to Norwood with just over two minutes left in the half for a 35-3 advantage.

Anthony Scirrotto fumbled a punt, and the Orange recovered, leading to a 43- yard field goal with less than a minute to go in the half, but Kevin Kelly came back and hit a 52-yarder to account for the 38-6 halftime score.

Penn State kept the offense going, as Green ran for a two-yard score with 5:28 left in the third to give the Lions a 45-6 lead while the Orange finally found the end zone late in the third. Sales caught an 11-yard strike from Dantley on 4th-and-8 to make it 45-13 with 1:29 to go in the third quarter, capping a nine-play, 59-yard drive.

Collin Wagner added a 43-yard field goal for the Lions with only a few seconds left in the third for a 48-13 lead after three quarters.

Paul Cianciolo became the third Penn State quarterback to throw for a touchdown in the game with 2:55 left in the game, completing a 32-yard score to Derek Moye on 4th-and-11 to cap the scoring at 55-13.
