NCAA Game Summary - Wake Forest At Vanderbilt

Saturday, November 24, 2007

(Sports Network) - Wake Forest used two Josh Adams touchdown runs to plow through non-conference foe Vanderbilt, 31-17, at Vanderbilt Stadium.

Adams ran for a game-high 111 yards for the victorious Demon Deacons (8-4), as the squad sealed only its fifth eight-win season in school history. Riley Skinner passed for 146 yards on 21-of-31 pass attempts, throwing two touchdowns and an interception. The defense came up clutch throughout the game, as they forced two fumbles and two interceptions, both of which were caught by Alphonso Smith. Smith's two picks give him eight on the year, a single-season program record.

The Commodores (5-7) saw a promising season fall by the wayside as they lost their fourth straight contest. Starting quarterback Mackenzi Adams had a particularly rough outing, throwing an interception and fumbling the ball twice in limited action. He was replaced with Richard Kovalcheck who threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns on 23-of-38 passes. Falling behind early, the Vanderbilt running game was nowhere to be found, picking just 16 yards in the entire contest.

The Commodores actually got on the board first as Bryant Hahnfeldt connected on a 24-yard field goal midway through the first frame.

Wake Forest then scored 31 straight points, starting with a 14-yard scamper into the end zone by Adams.

Ben Wooster's one-yard touchdown grab from Skinner was the lone score in the second quarter, as the Deacons held a 14-3 halftime lead.

Just a minute into the third quarter, De'Angelo Bryant caught an eight-yard Skinner pass for a touchdown.

Adams' second touchdown came just a minute later on a 12-yard jaunt into the end zone.

Sam Swank got in on the scoring bonanza with a 32-yard field goal midway through the third frame, giving Wake Forest a commanding 31-3 lead.

The Commodores made the score respectable in the fourth quarter with two Kovalcheck touchdown passes. Earl Bennett hauled in a 28-yarder and Bryant Anderson posted a 12-yard effort.

The brutal home loss for the Commodores ended any chance Vanderbilt had at participating in its first bowl game in 25 years.
