Grobe Staying At Wake; Arkansas Job Still Open

Thursday, December 6, 2007

(Sports Network) - The University of Arkansas apparently lost another potential candidate for its head football coaching vacancy, as Jim Grobe will reportedly stay at Wake Forest.

A report from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette said Grobe interviewed with incoming Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long on Tuesday, but the Charlotte Observer on Thursday cited a Wake Forest athletic department source as saying Grobe will stay with the Demon Deacons.

Arkansas is trying to replace Houston Nutt, who resigned after the season and took the job at Ole Miss. The Razorbacks apparently had interest in Clemson's Tommy Bowden earlier this week, but he agreed to a contract extension with the Tigers.

The latest news spurred a statement from Long on Thursday.

"The search for a head football coach at the University of Arkansas is ongoing," Long stated. "While I have been involved in detailed discussions with candidates, no formal offer has been extended and no agreement has been reached. I understand and appreciate the strong interest in the search by our supporters and fans. Our parameters for the search remain the same, finding the best head football coach for the University of Arkansas. We will continue to work expeditiously to that end and I'm confident that we will achieve our goal."

Grobe guided Wake Forest to the ACC title in 2006. The Demon Deacons are 8-4 this season and will play in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte.
