NCAA Game Summary - Idaho At Troy

Saturday, October 30, 2004

Troy picked up a pair of defensive touchdowns and another on special teams as the Trojans dismantled the Idaho Vandals, 47-7, in Sun Belt Conference play from Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium.

Running back DeWhitt Betterson added a game-high 184 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for Troy (4-4, 2-2 SBC), which snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory.

The Vandals (2-7, 1-4) were paced by quarterback Michael Harrington who hit 10-of-24 for 163 yards and the only touchdown of the game for the squad, while also being sacked three times and intercepted twice in the team's second loss in as many tries.

Troy, which forced seven turnovers on the afternoon, opened the day's scoring with a defensive touchdown as Johnny Faulk returned a fumble 79 yards less than two and a half minutes into the contest.

The Trojans pushed their lead to 13-0 (following a failed extra-point kick) when Betterson found the end zone on an eight-yard run.

The advantage was stretched to 20-0 when Leodis McKelvin raced 60 yards with a punt return at the 6:40 mark of the first quarter. The only points of the day for the Vandals followed as Harrington connected on a 28-yard touchdown strike with Luke Smith-Anderson to cut the deficit to 20-7.

Greg Whibbs nailed a 37-yard field in the second to push the Troy lead to 23-7 at the break and then began the third quarter with a 19-yard effort to cap a seven-play, 69-yard drive for the Trojans.

Three more touchdowns for Troy followed as Leverne Johnson brought back an interception 24 yards for a TD, Betterson scampered 56 yards into the end zone in the third period and Kenny Cattouse added a 26-yard TD run of his own to give the home team a 40-point cushion.

Troy ran for 280 yards on 48 attempts, while Idaho actually outgained the Trojans, 342-328, in the contest.
