Amazon started out selling books online, but it has since disrupted the retail industry by moving into categories like electronics, household items and even groceries with its purchase of Whole Foods.

Could the e-commerce giant be planning to sell prescription drugs next? That’s the rumor.

CNBC reports that Amazon is in the "final stages" of considering whether to enter into selling prescription drugs, and a source says a decision will be made before Thanksgiving.

If Amazon pursues online drug sales, it will reportedly start adding drug supply chain experts to its senior team.

Meanwhile, two analysts at the investment firm Leerink separately reported that Amazon will "almost certainly" get into the prescription drug distribution chain within the next two years, CNN Money reports.

Amazon hasn’t commented on either of the reports, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens next!

What we do know is that when Amazon enters a new category, it poses a threat to traditional retailers. For example, Amazon's price reductions at Whole Foods have taken customers away from other grocery stores, including Trader Joe's and Sprouts.

If Amazon goes into the pharmacy business, experts say the retailer could bring much-needed price transparency to the industry.
