Bear Spotted In Daytona Beach Neighborhoods

Posted: 12:44 pm EDT June 24, 2009Updated: 12:53 pm EDT June 24, 2009

When a local Fox Fire Circle resident let her dog out to perform its morning duties, she received quite a surprise from a friendly visitor.

According to News-JournalOnline.com, Fran Stump opened the door for her dog Greta when the mixed-breed rushed into the backyard and began to bark rapidly. Stump turned and caught what she calls, "a fleeting glimpse" of a medium-sized black bear clawing at Stump's bird feeder. The bear has recently been spotted in numerous locations in the area, including behind the Target store on International Speedway Boulevard.

Wildlife commission biologist Bret Owsley is investigating the situation, and believes that officials should focus on the long-term solution of removing what attracted the bear in the first place, rather then focusing on removing the bear now.
