Three Arrested In Blu-Ray Disc Theft Ring

Posted: 3:35 pm EDT August 5, 2009Updated: 3:43 pm EDT August 5, 2009

It took four years for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to do it, but Tuesday the masterminds behind a multi-million dollar Blu-ray disc theft ring were caught and arrested. The thieves would steal Blu-ray discs from stores all over Central Florida and re-sell them on eBay.

"There's nothing worse than a thief," FDLE Special Agent Mike Giddens said.

Officers say Gregory Marinitz was the mastermind behind the Blu-ray disc theft ring and they say James Davidson and Tina Pallay were his accomplices. Agents say the trio would use bags lined with foil to by-pass anti-theft systems at stores like Borders, Target and Barnes and Nobles.

"They'd make several trips in a few hour periods at the same store," Giddens said.

However, store security caught on and alerted state agents. It was too late though. Agents say Marinitz sold thousands of Blu-ray discs on eBay for a much lower cost.

"eBay is a huge outlet for this crime," Giddens said.

FDLE agents estimate the ring swiped between $4 to $5 million in Blu-ray discs since 2005 and, when agents raided Marinitz' Orlando home, they recovered more than 2,400 discs and hundreds of audio and video games.

"They planned it out and they got a routine they adhere to," Giddens said.

The accused thieves are charged with scheming to defraud. FDLE agents say the people who bought the Blu-ray discs online won't face charges, because the purchases were legitimate.
