Lieutenant Accused Of Firing Gun By Mistake

Posted: 6:33 pm EDT August 6, 2009Updated: 6:44 pm EDT August 6, 2009

A lieutenant with the Lake County Fire Department didn't have a concealed weapons permit, but still brought a high-powered gun to his fire station and somehow, the gun fired.

Lieutenant Charles Blinco remained on duty at the fire station during an internal investigation. He says he forgot the assault rifle was in his car and the shooting was accidental.

Lake County says a WASR-10, a type of AK- 47, went off in a parking lot outside fire station 76 in Yalaha one week ago. It was in the car of one of the fire rescue's highest ranking firefighters, Lieutenant Charles Blinco.

"I take it very seriously and the county does as well," said Gary Kaiser, Public Safety Director.

Kaiser wouldn't confirm the firefighter's identity, but says he is under an internal investigation. However, the Lake County Sheriff's Office says Blinco reported the incident to a deputy on Tuesday, five days after the incident.

Blinco says he was getting off work and when he moved the gun around in his car, it fired a round right through his car into a fellow firefighter's vehicle. No one was injured and there was no damage to any county property.

"The fact that no one was injured was just a stroke of luck and we will deal with it accordingly," Kaiser said.

The lieutenant didn't have a concealed weapons permit, but the Lake County Sheriff's Office says it doesn't matter because the gun was in the trunk of Blinco's car.

Kaiser says Blinco did violate policy by bringing the assault rifle onto county property. Now, the man who has almost 15 years of service to Lake County Fire Rescue is possibly facing punishment.

Even though Blinco could be disciplined on Friday, a hearing is scheduled for Monday where he will accept, reject or appeal the county's decision.

Blinco says he provided proof from a local gun shop, saying the assault rifle fired because it was defective.
