Police: Employee Smuggled Drugs Into Jail

A state corrections employee in Lake County was out of jail Friday after she was accused of smuggling drugs, cash and cell phones to inmates.

Julia Bedenbaugh, 39, bonded out of the Lake County jail Thursday night. Investigators say the human services counselor, who worked with inmates who have mental health problems, was smuggling contraband into the Lake County Correctional Institution near Clermont.

The Florida Inspector General's Office says it got a tip that she was receiving drug packages at a post office in Astatula.

"Any job inside a correctional facility is a very sensitive position and I think we and the State Corrections Department would expect they would live up to a higher standard," said Cpl. Jim Vachon, Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Bedenbaugh has only been charged with intent to distribute cocaine. Charges related to the smuggling of contraband into the prison are pending.
