Illegal Gambling Raids Bust Sumter Businesses

Deputies took so many slot machines and computers they think were set up for online gambling from businesses around The Villages, they had to rent a storage shed to hold them all. Sumter County deputies raided four businesses Thursday, two near The Villages and two near Wildwood.

Deputies say thee were all illegal gambling halls. One owner happened to be there when deputies arrived and she was jailed for running a gambling house.

In a building along US-441, deputies seized more than four-dozen video slot machines. Sumter County deputies hauled boxes full of computer screens out of the small Villages-area store called Coconuts and patron Patricia Groves gave them an earful over it.

"The people in The Villages and around this area, they can go in, play 9-Cents, and stay there for two or three hours and have a good time. It's something to pass the time away and I don't understand why they're doing this,” Groves said.

"It's illegal gambling,” Lt. Bobby Caruthers said.

Caruthers says Coconuts is an Internet casino where patrons purchased pre-paid phone cards to gamble online, but handcuffed owner Sarah Ames says it's all on the up-and-up.

"They gave us a license, a business license, occupational license, sweepstakes license. They shouldn't give that to anybody if they say it's not legal,” Ames said.

A few blocks down US-441, detectives also raided the Villages Fun Center. There they seized more than 50 Vegas-style video slot machines.

Some counties and prosecutors are cracking down on the businesses, some are not. At Coconuts, Patricia Groves was steamed.

"They're claiming it's gambling and there are payouts,” WFTV reporter Berndt Peterson told Groves.

“Ahh! It's fun! It's not gambling. It's Internet,” Groves said.

But Sumter detectives say patrons are gambling. Most lose their money and a very few win some.

Detectives believe places like Coconuts are turning a huge profit. They say the rent on the building is $4,000 a month and they found an invoice for the slot machines for $86,000.
