2nd Suspicious Fire Destroys Religious Center

Posted: 8:59 am EDT October 27, 2009Updated: 4:14 pm EDT October 27, 2009

A massive fire destroyed an Orlando religious center just after midnight Tuesday and officials say it is the second fire in three days. Investigators are saying that an arsonist is likely to blame.

Flames were shooting from the roof when a police officer drove by and saw the Baha'i Center of Orlando on Hillcrest Street near Colonial Drive (see map) on fire again Tuesday morning.

The back of the building was already destroyed in a fire Saturday. Now, the entire religious worship center is a loss.

AT THE SCENE: 2nd Suspicious Fire Destroys Religious Center

Demolition crews worked Tuesday to tear down the worship center.

Members who worship at the center have little doubt an arsonist is responsible.

"Just a layperson guessing, but I think over 48 hours after the original fire, I think the chances of a fire smoldering and reigniting like that are pretty low," said Naim Fanaian, Baha'i Center of Orlando.

The Baha'i Center is a place of worship for all religions, including, Buddhism, Christian, Hindu, Jewish and Muslim.

“Obviously this is a tragic loss for our Bahai community, but at the same time it’s just a physical structure,” member Kelsey Vargas said.

Vargas has been a member of the Bahai faith two years and they believe in working towards universal peace and brotherhood. She says she doesn’t know anyone who would want to set the center on fire.

“The Bahai faith is a religion that promotes harmony and unity and we have no enemies,” she said.

Firefighters with the Orlando Bomb and Arson unit aren't so sure. They posted a $1,000 Crimeline reward sign in front of the religious center to lure anyone who may have seen anything suspicious before or after the fires that destroyed this building.

Investigators said that looking into the fire as a possible hate crime at this point, would be a stretch.

“It could be a good thing, you never know what God’s plan is,” member Reginald Bahai said.

The city of Orlando brought in a crew to demolish the building, which will cost about $10,000 and that cost will be passed on to the religious worship center.

Police are asking anyone who may have information about who set this fire to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS.
