BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- There could be a serial arsonist on the loose in Central Florida's second largest city. Investigators say someone set seven brush fires in Palm Bay.The fires were all in the same area as the series of wildfires that torched 33 homes in May of 2008. No one was ever charged with setting the 2008 wildfires. Investigators think seven of the fires set in the south end of Palm Bay could have been set on purpose. They all burned within the past two weeks. The fires could get very dangerous when the worst of the wildfire season gets here. With conditions getting drier, fire officials are concerned about what they are already seeing. There is more and more charred acreage emerging in Palm Bay. For the month of November there has been on average one brush fire every day and for a majority the cause has been left undetermined.Firefighters stopped one blaze before it destroyed a nearby apartment building."This one was 20 feet away from the building. The flames were 25 to 30 feet in the air," resident Robin Masek said. The city's fire marshal says it's hard to tell if the fires were set intentionally and if they were, there is little evidence pointing at any particular person."We don't know for sure because we don't have any witnesses who will give us clues as to what or who these people may be," Palm Bay Fire Marshal Mike Coutre said.Police arrested Brian Crowder last year for setting fires 18 months ago, but charges were dropped for lack of evidence. He is still in prison for violation of probation. If this is the work of a fire bug, Robin Masek thinks they will eventually be found."They are not going to stop. They will mess up eventually," Masek said. But with the rainy season over and the dry season kicking in, the fire department is asking residents to be on alert looking for anything suspicious. It is already dry in Brevard County. On the drought index with a scale of 0 to 800 with 800 being driest, Brevard County registers a 613. There are actually some parts of south Brevard County that are registering higher than 700, which is really dry this early in the season.
