Bicyclist Killed By Semi In Downtown Orlando

Several intersections in downtown Orlando were shut down Monday afternoon after a semi-truck collided with a person on a bicycle. The bicyclist was killed.

The cause of the crash at Church Street and Hughey Avenue (see map) was still under investigation Monday afternoon as police tried to piece together how it happened.

According to the traffic homicide unit, the crash happened around 9:30am. Apparently, the semi was heading eastbound on Church Street and was making a right turn onto Hughey, heading southbound, when the semi collided with the bicyclist, 46-year-old Elroy C. Daniel, and ran him over.

Daniel died as a result. The bike was crushed and parts of it were stuck under the tractor.

Police say the driver, 26-year-old Kenneth Thomas Carter III, had a passenger and, so far, Thomas Carter III has been cooperating with police.

“He’s distraught about it. Right now, he’s going to have to give his testimony. But it’s not always about testimony. It’s gonna be about physical evidence and other people who saw what happened,” explained Barbara Jones, Orlando Police Department.

Thomas Carter III works for Fulford Van and Storage Co., an Orlando-based business. Management there wouldn't speak to Eyewitness News over the phone.

The big question now is who is at fault for the accident. Apparently, Orange County sheriff’s deputies saw what happened and called the accident in, but those details have yet to be released.
