Friend Says I-4 Rape Suspect Was Trying To Help

Posted: 8:59 am EST November 24, 2009Updated: 6:48 pm EST November 24, 2009

The man accused of raping a sick woman that he picked up along I-4 was still out of jail on bond Tuesday. Winel Castro-Molina is telling his friends that he was only trying to help the woman last month.

Castro-Molina was processed through his court appearance Tuesday, but the major hearing on his bond status was postponed until December 1. Castro-Molina was allowed out of jail without a monitoring device last month.

Eyewitness News reporter George Spencer tried to talk to Castro-Molina Tuesday, but he would not say one word.

“Can you get the point here? Can you wait until this is over with? Then we'll give you every interview you want,” Castro-Molina’s unidentified friend said.

A friend of the accused I-4 rapist didn't take kindly to WFTV’s requests for a comment Tuesday afternoon.

Winel Castro-Molina stood in line with dozens of others facing court charges. He is still a free man, nearly a month after his alleged crime, and is still unwilling to talk.

“Do you want to speak for yourself, Winel?” Spencer asked.

But a source close to the defendant has talked to Eyewitness News, saying Castro-Molina found his supposed victim face down in the dirt along I-4 that night and washed her off with a water bottle. The source claims the woman, who was ill, told Castro-Molina to drive her home in her car, saying her cousin would bring him back to his gold minivan.

But the woman was so out of it, the source insists, she couldn't even direct Castro-Molina to her home and she began throwing up. The woman then needed to go to the bathroom. The source says Castro-Molina was simply trying to help her out of the car in the parking lot when police stumbled upon them.

Castro-Molina denied the crime to Eyewitness News last week.

“Winel we need to talk to you. Did you rape that woman?” Spencer asked last week.

“No,” Castro-Molina replied.

However, Altamonte Springs police say they found him on top of his victim and they did administer a sex assault kit on the victim to prove their theory of sexual battery. What's more, police say, even unwanted sexual touching would be enough to prove the sexual battery charge against Castro-Molina.

Eyewitness News will be back in court December 1 to find out whether a judge thinks he's enough of a threat to revoke his bond.

Castro-Molina is out on a $25,000 bond, meaning he only had to come up with $2,500. He has no GPS monitor, so the only person in contact with him is his bondsman.
