CLERMONT, Fla. -- It's tax time, but thieves in Lake County are trying to get refunds they didn't earn. Police are investigating at least six cases of fake W-2 forms submitted to the same H&R Block office in Clermont. All six wanted the immediate refund and two of them got away with cash. Police won't say how much the crooks got away with, but those six, and maybe more, all walked in with the fake W-2s trying to rip off the place. The scammers targeted an H&R Block on Highway 50 in Clermont. Police said at least six people used the bogus forms to try to get advances on tax refunds. The H&R Block company website boasts, "Get money quickly and conveniently." That's apparently what the crooks did, likely going after what H&R Block calls an "instant refund anticipation loan." Basically, the store advances customer some of the money they're expecting to get back from the IRS.Two of the crooks actually got away with some money, before H&R Block realized there was a problem. Neither the store nor the police will say how much money they took, since it's still under investigation.Of the half dozen or so people who walked through the door with fake documents, police believe at least some of them used their real names and real information. So, police are hoping to soon track them down and figure out how big the tax scam really is.Tuesday afternoon, an IRS spokesman told Eyewitness News that if the taxes actually got filed it would be a felony for tax evasion. Whoever did it could get fines and prison time.
