DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Daytona Beach firefighter was supposed to protect people and keep them safe; instead, he's accused of picking up a tourist at a beach-front bar, raping her and threatening to kill her. Police say he even got his victim pregnant.

Wednesday afternoon, 30-year-old Adam Silva remained employed at the Daytona Beach Fire Department.Silva was accused of picking up the girl at the Ocean Deck Restaurant and Beach Club (see map) and then raping her. He’s still being paid by the department.Despite DNA evidence that police say connects Silva to the crime, the city of Daytona Beach not only says he's still employed, he hasn't even been suspended for allegations of a terrifying crime that, to many, seems the ultimate betrayal. The victim says she’s now pregnant with her rapist's child.Silva was free on bond Wednesday evening, less than 24 hours after police say all the pieces of a frightening rape involving the 3-year city firefighter finally came together.“It's just a black eye on the profession,” said Jimmy Flynt, Daytona Beach Police Department.Investigators say Silva met his victim in May at the popular Ocean Deck restaurant right on the water. Police believe she was a visitor who chatted with Silva and asked him for a ride home. They say he agreed, but not before cameras at the restaurant caught the two together.“It just kinda confirms her story that she was with him. She was outside and she said he was going to give her a ride,” Flynt said. But, police told WFTV, Silva instead took the victim to an empty parking lot and raped her. As she tried to fight back, he allegedly said: "You'll end up like Natalee Holloway. I've seen her on vacation, too, and you'll end up like her, too, I'll kill you.”Police said they eventually found the victim, around 3:00am, wandering around nude from the waist down; she was so confused she thought she was in West Virginia.Tests found DNA from Silva on the victim's body.WFTV tried to get answers Wednesday about Silva's status with the fire department. All they would say is that the department is now conducting its own internal investigation into the allegations.WFTV got no answer at Silva's home Wednesday, but found out he's been investigated before. When Silva worked as a firefighter in Longwood, the city investigated claims that he violated Internet policy. Sources say he may've been surfing porn on city equipment. He was only proven guilty of using Longwood's equipment for personal reasons and he resigned in May 2006.If Silva is convicted of this felony, he could be fired from his job. HR officials did not think he'd been with Daytona Beach long enough to start accruing a pension. Since he's not suspended, right now Silva is taking time off using personal days.
